1. Not Burning Long Enough

Luxury candles are designed to provide a clean, even burn—but only if you use them correctly. One common mistake is not letting the candle burn long enough during its first use.

When you light your candle for the first time, let it burn until the entire surface melts into a pool of wax. This prevents “tunnelling,” where the candle burns unevenly, leaving unburned wax on the sides.

Pro Tip: Aim to burn your candle for at least one hour per inch of its diameter during the first use. For example, a 3-inch single wick candle should burn for about three hours. However, if your candle has multiple wicks, it’ll burn faster. On average, a 10cm/4 inch candle like ours will take about 2-3 hours at first burn, to melt across the surface. 

2. Cutting the Wick Too Short

Keeping your candle wick trimmed is important for a clean burn, but cutting it too short can cause problems. If the wick is too short, it won’t produce a proper flame. This can lead to an uneven melt pool or even cause the candle to go out prematurely.

What to Do:
Trim your wick to about ¼ inch or 5mm before each burn. This ensures a steady, safe flame while minimizing soot. A properly trimmed wick also helps your candle burn more efficiently, maximizing its lifespan.

3. Manufacturing Faults

Even the best luxury candles can have occasional manufacturing issues, such as an off-center wick or improper wax formulation. These faults can lead to uneven burning, weak flames, or excessive soot.

What to Do:
If you’ve ruled out user-related factors and your candle is still not performing as expected, it’s time to contact the brand. Most luxury candle companies stand by their quality and will often offer replacements or advice to resolve the issue. It is very important that you follow the brand’s burn instructions to a T, because one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to candle behavior.

• Avoid Drafts: Place your candle in a draft-free area to prevent uneven burning and excessive flickering.

I believe in the art of scent training, which essentially means being consistent when it comes to fragrancing your home.

From natural incense, to energy cleansers and luxury candles, read on below as I share which fragrancing tools I gravitate toward, and how I’ve created a scent culture with them.

Energy Cleansing – AKA Smudging

I source my palo santo sticks sustainably, ensuring they’re produced in an environmentally friendly way. I smudge my home first thing in the morning, as my herbal tea or coffee brews. I also smudge to purify and clear the air of any unwanted energy before a meditation session. Some smudging tools such as sage, have been scientifically proven to alter energetic states. Though I sometimes use sage on the rare occasion the energy in my home is dense, I stick to palo santo for regular use because it’s headier and much lighter than sage.

Scented Objects
My go-to scented object is the scented pomegranate from the Florentine Santa Maria Novella pharmacy, which is like a mini work of art to me. It’s definitely an investment as I typically go through a few a year, but it’s absolutely worth it. I love placing these in my hallway, so it hits me the minute I walk through the door. After a few months when the scent wanes, I put them in my wardrobe, cupboards or in my bathroom, where the humidity helps to release the fragrance.

These handcrafted clay pomegranates are created by immersing the porous clay forms into pure essential and fragrance oils until the fragrance is imbued.

Luxury Scented Candle

I enjoy scented candles that are well made and complex in nature. I’ve been loyal to POTC since 2018 when I started making them. Because I know exactly what’s in our candles, that they are small-batch handmade, with the best ingredients, I never look elsewhere.

I burn a candle in the evening after cooking to remove any unwanted smells, during relaxation, such as baths or down time, or simply throughout the day when I’m pulled to do so. My favourite is definitely Roses and Tomatoes, which I burn a candle for a minimum of an hour, until the candle’s surface has melted, and for a maximum of 4 hours, so that the scent really lingers. The more frequently I burn the same candle or a complementary one from our range, I “scent train” my space, meaning that the scent stays for longer and my home has its own scent signature.

Although travelling has changed in the last two years due to being a toddler mum, I’ve somehow managed to adapt; honestly speaking it is quite challenging! I’ll share my essentials for easeful travelling with a child in another post.

But it’s worth it as my babe starts experiencing the world from a young age like my parents did with me. I started travelling with him as soon as he was born, now at 2 years old he’s privileged to have seen some wonderful places.

Venice Biennale – International Art Exhibition

We were recently in Venice, Italy, with the rest of the family who gathered to show their support, as I had the pleasure of being invited to exhibit my work in the 60th Venice Biennale, titled “Foreigners Everywhere”.

I subsequently won the prize of the “Silver Lion for a promising young participant”, so I was quite thrilled to say the least.

Gifting our Candles

One of the ways I love showing appreciation to others is by gift giving. So I just couldn’t resist gifting some dear and respected supporters and Curators some of our POTC candles.

For instance, Beatrice Bulgari who supports the production of my artwork through her wonderful foundation “Fondazione in Between Art Film“, received an Earl Grey and Iris candle with its harmonious blend of delicate black tea, citrus bergamot and powdery Iris flower.

I thought this aptly symbolised her powerful feminine essence, while Adriano Pedrosa, Curator of the 60th Venice Biennale, received my favourite Roses and Tomatoes candle, with its distinct sweet and earthy notes of damask rose, tomato leaf and fresh mossy grass, a nod to his curious and self-assured nature.

The 60th International Art Exhibition runs until Sunday 24 November, 2024. My video installation “Machine Boys”, 2024, can be seen in the Arsenale section.

Clutter Blocks

Clutter creates dense energy. And I’m not just talking about the seen clutter, rather the unseen – drawers, wardrobes, even the things in your attic or basement. Attics and basements are exceptionally important spaces because they act as containers for energy. Energy often flows up and down like in your body, and can tend to get stuck in these up down spaces.

I tackle this by quickly opening some drawers or a cupboard. How does it make me feel? If it’s anything less than joyful, then it’s time to bring in some joy.

I get rid of anything that doesn’t make me feel good.

Now I get it, where to find the time? Listen, I’m a mum to a boisterous toddler, working full time and I’m always pushed timewise. But I find an hour in the evening, put on my favourite podcast and some headphones. Grab a glass of wine or I do love a calming sleep tea with herbs from Miraherba. Then I delve into those cluttered spaces and organise in a way that makes sense to me. While it’s fine to seek inspiration from instagram or Pinterest, if it’s not conducive to my lifestyle or practical – forget it.

Scent and Air

I regularly add flourishes of greenery – green plants, fresh flowers or even dried flowers. Bring greenery into my home deepens its connection to nature. Greenery of course improves air quality, and flora is symbolic of the cycle of life, which we are all connected to. I’m not the best at keeping plants alive these days so it’s dried flowers and wreathes for me.

It’s important to create routines around scenting my space. This could be anything such as lighting some incense or palo santo after the evening meal or first thing in the morning.

I smudge my space regularly with bundles of white sage or palo santo; natural herbs and tree elements that are scientifically proven to cleanse negative energy away.

Lighting a candle for an hour a day – in the morning while getting ready for work or in the evening while winding down, resets energy all round. Scenting my space regularly, ensures it always smells as good as it can. I’m obsessed with making sure that first scent hit when I open my front door is as pleasant and inviting as it can be.

Airing out my apartment regularly, especially in the winter when the heating air tends to make things condensed, is essential for a positive air flow.

The great thing about POTC candles is that they are incredibly potent – my space remain strongly scented even when a window is opened to let in a blast of fresh air.

Training Thoughts

The thoughts you hold in your head about your home, affects the energy of your space. I always try to make sure that I’m thinking positive, thankful thoughts about my home and everything in it, even the appliances.

Perhaps you live in a rented apartment and your dream is to own your own home in the not too distant future.

If you’re constantly thinking negatively about your “small, cramped” apartment, guess what? It will feel small, cramped and miserable. You will feel stuck.

Instead, imbue your thoughts with gratitude and think of your bijoux, cosy nest that provides you with warmth, shelter and space for all your things. You will soon find that you’re literally in a space of gratitude and less resistance, able to easily attract and align with what it is you truly desire.

You will find inspiration coming to you about how to make your current space the best it can be, as well as how to open yourself up energetically to more opportunities to bring in more abundance in order to increase your income and attain your dream future space. Louise Hay’s book “You can Heal your Life”, is a great starting point for bringing more happiness to your thoughts.
